Lucky Four

When the singers Hans Martin Austestad, Nils Christian Fossdal, Håkon Rasmussen and Mattis Myrland gathered around a microphone for film music recording in 2010, it was instantly clear that this was going to sound mighty fine. The movie, in which they also appeared on the screen, was entitled 'Happy, Happy' and received the 2011 Sundance Film Festival Jury Award. The same year the movie was chosen to be Norway's candidate for the Oscar Award.

The quartet, consisting of competent singers in several genres, has fallen in love with rural American harmony singing, Bluegrass, Old-Time, Southern, Gospel and Jubilee songs. They accompany themselves with guitar and banjo. They sing extroverted songs about love and loss, with voices ranging from the rumbling bass register to the brighter longings.

Although their music may sound rural, they have reached a broad audience of different age groups and backgrounds. They've performed in big concert halls and in tiny clubs, on norwegian national TV and for school kids both in Norway and in Sri Lanka, where they toured in 2012, in collaboration with Concerts Norway and the Sewalanka Foundation.
